Russian Ammo Ban? Don't panic...
Over the weekend all of the gun blogs and news outlets started getting people worked up with headlines like this:
Then the expected happen: People started buying a ton of it. The supply of steel cased ammo started drying up as hundreds of thousands of gun owners rushed to purchase it. Retailers raised prices. Then people really started to panic and bought more… rinse and repeat.
Upon hearing the news I dug a little deeper to understand the situation better. I found the actual document from the State Department. Which has this blurb:
New sanctions imposed today under the CBW Act include:
- Restrictions on the permanent imports of certain Russian firearms. New and pending permit applications for the permanent importation of firearms and ammunition manufactured or located in Russia will be subject to a policy of denial.
Now I’m not an expert on international law or importation, but the words “New and pending permit applications” caught my eye. So I dug a little deeper. In doing more research and listening to a few folks, I learned that this only applies to new and pending permit applications - existing permits are not affected. So what that means is that importers will continue to be able to import the ammo they have listed on their import permit - this could be millions of rounds in some cases for the big importers.
These sanctions are scheduled to last a minimum of 12 months, unless they can be rolled back… or fought. It is up to all of us to make a big deal about this and not give the Biden Administration a pass on this backdoor gun control.
While not entirely a rosy picture, there is still going to be Russian ammunition coming into the market for a while until all existing permits are exhausted. After that it is anyone’s guess and will depend on a lot of factors. However Russia isn’t the only country that makes steel cased ammo, so other companies will jump in to fill the void - but it will take time.
Now, if you have been subscribed to our service you definitely shouldn’t be one of those that is running around acting like the sky is falling. Why? Because you have ammo already sitting in our warehouse at prices much lower than what they jumped up to over the weekend. Of course we don’t have a magic wand and will be subject to same tides as the rest of the market, once you have ammo allocated to your inventory it is yours forever and it doesn’t matter what happens in the outside world: you can request it any time and get it within a week.
Now that’s piece of mind!
